@Work Contemporary Jewellery, a handmade and a workshop based jewellery and accessories Design Company, is focusing on expanding their range of handmade jewelleries to across London. Currently selling in Pimlico and Brick lane as well as online. Adele Tipler and Jo Butler, looking to grow their business in a wider areas in London, and I will be working with Jo Butler, one of the founder of this company throughout this re designing their postcards, Jewellery course flyer, look book/catalogue, promotional vouchers, etc. I would also like to explore the areas of silver jewellery and the process of making it by getting involved in the workshop.
Context
Adele Tipler and business partner Jo Butler set up their contemporary jewellery gallery @Work over 10 years ago in East London's Brick Lane, helping to fuel a renaissance in the area, now renowned as a creative hub.
"It was a natural progression from being self employed artists, selling our own work through other outlets. We felt the need to have direct contact with our customers and also be able to sell the work of other independent designers," says Adele.
The shop, a previous winner of Time Out's Best Independent Shop of the Year, offers beautifully designed, unique contemporary jewellery, some of which are Adele and Jo’s creations, while others are from a range of independent designers. In 2005, the pair was able to expand their business, and opened their second gallery in Pimlico. This branch offers jewellery-making classes popular with people keen to test their creativity and gain a new skill.
Rationale
Previous experiences in layout design, creating handmade typefaces; and have directional experiences have inspired me to do this task and presenting it in a creative manner.
Skills Evidence:
Topicality and future projection potential
Working in print direction in graphic design projects I find it interesting and very contemporary style in the creative industry.
Intellectual rigour and debate
I always like to refer back to the history and design theory practice. I am also interested in creating unique design work that reference the old ways of hand making jewellery to present it in a fresh, contemporary and elegant ways for this company. I believe that handmade jewellery companies are growing fast and exploring in many creative solutions.
Focus of research and analysis
I will be looking at different forms of jewellery making techniques, particularly in the area of silver, as I am very keen to explore the areas of silver jewellery. I would like to participate to learn how to make silver jewellery, possibly a ring, as I have never made it before.
Practical skills involved
Making the jewellery possibly a silver ring, image and type layout of the catalogue / look book, postcard size course information design and Art direction.
Sustainability and Content of project
The initial identity needs to be produced, followed by the catalogue and the postcard sized course information of the company. The large volume of work required to promote this contemporary jewellery will sustain the own style and allow it to grow in its potential manner. I would like to learn how to make silver jewellery; possibly a ring and I plan to document the steps in the production workshop.
Projection of professional or further research ambitions
The design project opens up opportunities for future ambitions and creates a good working area, and developing personal interest in this area that I want to carry on into a professional career that I particularly enjoy.
Elements of risk and challenge
There are challenges that will stand out against other jewellery company in this growing sub-section of the contemporary jewellery field. By having connection with the live client in regular bases and meetings have giving me to taste the real life experience.
Predicated outcomes
Predicated outcomes for this project would be Promotional print material including labelling, postcard size course information 09/10, look book/catalogue, and making a silver jewellery, possibly a ring.
Manufacturing and production issues
Creating something glamorous with a limited budget and producing a piece of jewellery using the workshop.
Opportunities for professional feedback
I will work directly with Jo Butler, the designer who makes handmade jewellery and I will also be in contacts within the graphic design industry people who will be happy to give me possible feedback, including designer Lizzie Finn and Lisa Vasilidou.
